Case study of sand table model production for industrial new city planning

This case study takes the large-scale industrial new city planning sand table in the figure as the prototype, and details the refined production process of high fidelity urban planning sand table. This model is mainly used for enterprise exhibition halls, investment promotion displays, and urban planning achievement reports.

1、 Project Overview

The project prototype is a water facing industrial new city, covering multiple functional areas such as industrial parks, commercial and residential buildings, transportation networks, ecological water systems, and green landscapes. The overall layout is circular, with both industrial agglomeration and ecological livability characteristics. The model is made at a scale of 1:1500, with the core goal of accurately reproducing the spatial structure, functional zoning, and visual hierarchy of the area, providing an intuitive immersive carrier for investment promotion and planning display.

2、 Production process

1. Data collection and base modeling

The production team first collects regional master plan drawings, satellite remote sensing images, and elevation data, extracts accurate geographic information through GIS technology, and constructs a digital terrain model. The high-density foam board and ABS board are used for layered carving to restore the regional topographic relief and water system contour, and the base surface is sprayed with light gray paint to simulate the urban road base, so as to ensure that the geographical morphology is highly matched with the actual landform. For the circular display base, customized fiberglass material is used for integrated molding to ensure the overall stability and display aesthetics of the model.

2. Functional Blocks and Architectural Production

Industrial parks and commercial and residential buildings are produced according to functional zoning: high-rise office buildings and residential buildings are laser cut from ABS boards and spliced together, with differentiated colors such as beige and light gray sprayed on the surface to distinguish building functions; The industrial factory buildings are mainly designed with simple geometric shapes, complemented by gray metallic texture paint, reflecting industrial attributes. The core landmark building adopts 3D printing technology to produce detailed components, such as glass curtain walls, roof shapes, etc., to enhance recognition. All buildings are arranged accurately in proportion, strictly following the planned road network and functional zoning logic.

3. Transportation and Ecological Environment Creation

Transportation network section: The main roads are cut and pasted with dark gray PVC boards, supplemented by white lines to simulate lanes; Secondary roads and footpaths are distinguished by light gray materials, and micro street lamp models are evenly arranged at intervals to restore the texture of urban roads. The ecological water system is poured with transparent resin, mixed with blue pigment to simulate the texture of water, treated with ripples on the surface, and matched with small bridge models to restore the connectivity of the water area. Layered production of green landscape: simulated turf is laid on the base, and micro trees are made of plastic branches and electrostatic flocking. They are arranged in a staggered manner according to functional zones such as ecological corridors and park green spaces, creating a rich and layered urban green environment.

4. Lighting system and final assembly debugging

Internal construction of partitioned LED lighting system: The industrial park adopts cool white lighting to reflect a sense of technology; Combining warm yellow lighting in commercial and residential areas to create a living atmosphere; Embedding blue ambient lights at the edge of the water system to enhance the visual effect of the water body; Core landmark buildings are separately equipped with high brightness lights to highlight key areas. All components are assembled and calibrated on a circular base to ensure accurate correspondence between geographic coordinates and functional zones. Finally, circuit debugging and detail polishing are carried out to ensure the overall visual coordination and functional integrity of the model.

3、 Quality Control and Application Value

Establish a multi-stage quality inspection system during the production process, verifying terrain accuracy, building proportions, and lighting functions one by one to ensure that the model is highly consistent with the planning scheme. The finished model has been applied to enterprise exhibition halls and investment promotion events. With immersive scene restoration and clear functional zoning display, it effectively conveys the planning concept and development potential of the industrial new city, providing strong support for investment attraction and city image promotion.
